HOLY NAME OF JESUS

On the day of the Circumcision the son of God
made Man received the name of Jesus, which
signifies Savior; a name that should inspire us with
reverence, praise, confidence and love. “In the
name of Jesus, every knee should bend, of those
that are in heaven, on earth and under the earth, for
there is salvation in no other name, and the words
and life of every Christian should honor that Holy
Name. Since the Name of Jesus is the holiest,
sweetest and most powerful of all names, the
Church devotes a special day to its solemn
veneration. The feast of the Holy Name of Jesus is
celebrated on the Sunday which occurs between
January 1st and 6th. If no Sunday occurs between
January 1st and 6th, the feast is celebrated on
January 2nd
.
The emblem or monogram representing the Holy
name of Jesus consist of three letters, I. H. S. In the
Middle Ages, the name of Jesus was written
JHesus; the monogram contains the first, second
and the last letter of the Holy Name. Some derive
the monogram from the first three letters of the
Greek, Jesous, The E in Greek being sometimes
shaped like our letter H.
